First Novel by Melodie M. Davis “A Place in the Fold.” Published November 3, 2025

Who would drive away from a beloved spouse the day before Christmas? Monica Sue Herald did, and untold drama followed. Her husband Timothy, is a well-liked pastor but she cringes every time he uses her for a personal story when preaching. His father is also a pastor several hours away, but they don’t always get along like they should. And what is the secret that Monica’s mother holds in her heart for nearly 30 years, and why?

The novel is placed in the 1990s, before the days of almost everyone having cell phones, which might have changed the outcome of this tale. This book will induce tears of sadness and also joy for many, and also help couples with their precious and loving relationships.

New book added November 20, 2023!

Cultivating Fields, Family and Faith: Mom and Dad’s Memorable Mennonite Life, is a new book written by various family members and edited by columnist Melodie Miller Davis, Harrisonburg, Va. and formerly of Goshen, Ind.

Vernon U. Miller grew up near Emma, Ind. and married Bertha Stauffer, of Wakarusa, Ind. They lived most of their lives on farms near Middlebury and Wakarusa. Miller was deacon at North Goshen Mennonite Church for 18 years, and Bertha grew up in the Olive Mennonite Church near Wakarusa.

In the book, the Millers recount the CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program) farms Vernon helped to launch in the 1960s as a way of supporting those needing food in various countries around the world. They were also able to take a trip around the world after attending Mennonite World Conference in Amsterdam in 1967, to learn more about the relief programs they had long supported through Mennonite Church agencies.

Vernon died in 2006 and Bertha in 2021. Bertha lived almost 20 years at Greencroft Retirement Center’s Juniper Place apartments in Goshen. In addition to Davis, writers for the book include Nancy Ketcham, a graduate of Goshen College and now of Wakarusa, Ind.; Pert (Linda) Sheter of Calabash, NC, a graduate of Hesston College and Goshen, who served as a professor in the athletic department at Goshen College; and Terry Miller of Altha, Florida.

The paperback book, published through Kindle Direct Publishing is available on Amazon.com for $18.99 and from Davis at her blog, FindingHarmonyBlog.com.

Endorsement from Richard A. Kauffman, formerly editor at Christianity Today, The Christian Century, and Mennonite Publishing House:  “Some stories deserve to be told. Others are better taken to the grave. Thankfully, Melodie Miller Davis knows the difference. What an amazing story she tells of working for the same Mennonite media organization from her college graduation until retirement, 43 years later. She grew into the job, which continued to challenge her as new ventures came her way and technology was revolutionized. Vocation well-lived. Story well told!”
